Mary J Blige is attempting to make good with her fans after the “Burger King” commercial controversy last month. She brought some “soul” to the Kentucky Derby this past weekend and sang the “National Anthem” to start the events.
Not everyone welcomed Mary J to “The Derby” with open arms, however. When word got out that the Queen of Soul would be singing the “National Anthem” this year, many were livid, and voiced their concerns that Mary might “jazz” up the anthem too much (an idea that probably came from Mary’s rendention of the National Athem at the All Star Game a few months back).
A rep from the Kentucky Derby stated, ‘We’ve hosted the Derby for 137 years, we’re quick to find out that you can’t please everybody all the time but Mary J. Blige is a very exciting and talented individual that we can’t wait to host on Derby day’.
Check out Mary’s performance below. You decide, did she rock it?
