A prequel to the iconic 90s sitcom ‘Martin,’ titled ‘Young Martin,’ is currently in development. This hourlong series will explore the teenage years of Martin Payne, the character originally played by Martin Lawrence. Set in modern-day Detroit, the show will delve into themes of family, friendship, and adolescence. Martin Lawrence, through his production company RunTelDat, is collaborating with WonderHill Studios to bring this contemporary origin story to life. Executive producers include Martin Lawrence and Marvin Peart, among others, aiming to capture the humor and cultural impact of the original series.
Marvin Peart expressed his enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the cultural significance of ‘Martin’ and its positive portrayal of African American life. The original series, which aired from 1992 to 1997, was known for its wit and relatability, winning several awards including People’s Choice and NAACP Image awards. ‘Young Martin’ promises to continue this legacy, offering a fresh perspective to both old fans and a new generation.
