Halle Berry recently shared her disbelief and frustration over the fact that she is still the only Black woman to win the Academy Award for Best Actress, 22 years after her historic win for Monster’s Ball in 2002. In an interview with Marie Claire, Berry described her feelings as “eternally miffed” that no other Black actress has followed in her footsteps. She emphasized that it’s not for a lack of talent among Black actresses but rather systemic barriers within the film industry.

Berry had initially believed that her win would lead to significant change, opening doors for more Black actresses to receive similar recognition. She expressed her heartbreak, saying, “I thought that moment would mean something, but it didn’t.” Berry pointed out that while the representation of Black talent has improved in many areas, the Oscars remain a glaring example of the work still to be done.

Despite this, Berry remains hopeful that future Black actresses will break through the ceiling that she shattered in 2002. She also acknowledged that her win has inspired many within the industry to dream bigger and pursue their craft more fearlessly.

Berry’s comments serve as a reminder of the ongoing need for diversity and inclusion in Hollywood, especially within prestigious institutions like the Academy Awards.
