Muni Long has addressed the criticism surrounding her performance of Mariah Carey’s iconic song at the iHeart Music Awards, where many fans speculated that Carey wasn’t pleased with the tribute after she was seen with a disappointed expression on her face.

Taking to Instagram Live to set the record straight, Muni Long clarified that the performance was not her choice but a request from Mariah herself. “Y’all gonna understand queen things because y’all, well, I don’t wanna say y’all, but the people that’s got a lot to say, you don’t understand how this, like, paying homage and having respect for people,” she explained. “She asked me to do it. You thought I chose to get on TV and sing a Mariah Carey song? Why would I do that? Nobody can sing Mariah songs like Mariah.”

Muni went on to emphasize her respect for Mariah and shared that she was grateful for the opportunity. “I did my best, and that’s all I can do. But even if she hated it, which she didn’t… I’m not gonna post the footage of us talking afterwards because her lighting wasn’t right, and I’m not gonna do that to my girl,” she said, giving insight into the conversation they had after the performance.

Despite the rumors and speculation, Muni made it clear that Mariah expressed her appreciation for the tribute. “She told me I did a great job. She appreciated it. And that’s it,” Muni added. “If she pushed me down the stairs, if she told me she hated it, I would say thank you. That’s what I would say.”

Muni concluded by expressing gratitude for her supporters, “Thank you guys that love me and uplift me. Everybody else? (Middle finger)” With that, Muni Long has officially set the record straight and reminded fans that she has nothing but love and respect for the legendary Mariah Carey.
