BET+ Unveils First Adult Animated Comedy, Lil Kev, Inspired by Kevin Hart’s Childhood

BET+ is set to launch its first adult animated comedy, Lil Kev, a bold and satirical series inspired by Kevin Hart’s early years growing up in North Philadelphia. Premiering in the spring, the half-hour show brings Hart’s childhood to life with unapologetic humor and sharp commentary, delving into real-life experiences with no holds barred.
Set in 1993, Lil Kev follows 12-year-old Kevin Hart, whose wild imagination and relentless optimism constantly clash with the harsh realities of his neighborhood. The series paints a vivid picture of his upbringing, marked by a hardworking, God-fearing mother, Nancy (voiced by Wanda Sykes), who works night shifts as an ER nurse, and his irrepressible Uncle Richard Jr. (voiced by Deon Cole), a ripped, ex-con who offers dubious life advice.
Throughout the series, Kev navigates his rocky childhood, dealing with a mischievous older brother, Robert, a chaotic father, Henry, and his uncle’s unconventional wisdom—all while maintaining his sense of humor, heart, and hustle. As the characters around him influence his journey, Lil Kev offers a comedic look at the challenges and triumphs that helped shape the comedy superstar.
“I’m excited to deepen the partnership between Hartbeat and BET on a project so close to my heart,” said Kevin Hart. “With comedy veterans Wanda and Deon alongside me, we’re bringing Lil Kev to life—a hilarious celebration of stories inspired by my Philly roots, a place that will always be home to me.”
The series is produced by Hartbeat, with executive producers Kevin Hart, Bryan Smiley, Jeff Clanagan, Mike Stein, and Candice Wilson Cherry. ShadowMachine provides the animation, while BET+ and Hartbeat oversee the development and production. The team also includes Matthew Claybrooks and Michael Price as showrunners and executive producers, with Jason Harvey and Rose Catherine Pinkney serving as executive producers for BET+.
