Boxing champion Claressa Shields has been suspended by the Michigan Unarmed Combat Commission after testing positive for marijuana in a post-fight drug test. Despite the result, Shields vehemently denies ever smoking weed, calling the suspension “temporary” and asserting that she is awaiting trial to contest the “very petite amount” detected.

Shields, who recently made history as the first undisputed heavyweight champion and the first boxer to hold undisputed titles in three weight classes, now faces an investigation. According to Sky Sports, the investigation is centered around the marijuana test, as the substance is banned in-competition unless an athlete has an approved Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE).

The World Boxing Organization (WBO) has also requested an explanation from Shields regarding the test results. In a statement on social media, the champion addressed the situation directly: “I’ve never smoked weed… It’s a temporary suspension till I go to trial for the very petite amount.”

As the investigation continues, Shields’ team is expected to present their case and clear up the matter, while fans and the boxing world eagerly await further developments.
