After years of attempting to offload his one-third stake in Roc-A-Fella Records, Dame Dash has finally succeeded in selling his share, but not to the buyer he might have expected. According to the New York Post, the New York State government purchased Dash’s share for $1 million during a federal auction held in Manhattan on Thursday, November 14.

The sale is part of an effort by the state to address Dash’s outstanding tax liabilities, which total $8.7 million. An anonymous bidder, reportedly connected to the state government of Albany, secured the winning bid, with plans to potentially turn the purchase into a profitable solution for the record executive’s mounting financial troubles. However, the details regarding how or when the state plans to resell the asset remain unclear.

This auction follows a complex history between Dame Dash, Jay-Z, and the state of New York. Over the years, Dash has struggled to offload his share of the legendary label, but this recent sale to the state is seen as a significant step toward settling his tax debt.

In the lead-up to the auction, New York City officials had expressed concerns over the sale’s potential outcome, particularly regarding statements made by Jay-Z about the copyright ownership of the records. NYC attorney Gerald E. Singleton raised alarms, pointing out that Jay-Z had publicly warned potential buyers that ownership would revert back to him in 2031. Singleton called these statements misleading and harmful to the auction process, arguing they could depress the sale price and hinder the city’s ability to collect enough funds to settle various judgments, including child support arrears.

Now that the state has acquired the share, it remains to be seen how they will leverage this asset to resolve Dash’s financial issues. Whether they plan to hold onto it or sell it again to the highest bidder is still up in the air, but one thing is clear—the saga surrounding Dame Dash’s stake in Roc-A-Fella Records continues to evolve.
