Family Matters Star Jaleel White Reveals That Playing Steve Urkel Left His Voice Damaged For Years
Jaleel White recently revealed the physical toll his iconic role as Steve Urkel on Family Matters took on his voice. During an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, White shared that constantly changing his voice to portray the high-pitched, nerdy character caused lasting damage.
“I actually damaged some of my vocal cords,” White admitted. He explained that altering his voice for years had unexpected consequences, particularly because the role of Steve Urkel became so enduring and iconic. The actor pointed out that sustaining the Urkel voice for prolonged periods, especially as a child actor, had long-term effects on his vocal health. He reflected on the demands of the role, which went beyond just changing his appearance but also impacted his body.
Despite the challenges, White’s portrayal of Urkel became a cultural phenomenon, but this revelation sheds light on the physical sacrifices made behind the scenes. White also mentioned that he still experiences remnants of the vocal strain today, highlighting the lasting impact of the beloved character.
