Gervonta Davis is coming out swinging, but not with boxing gloves—this time, he’s using his words and revisiting past events, particularly his relationship with former mentor, Floyd Mayweather. While their partnership ended in 2022, the two have been exchanging verbal jabs for some time now. In a recent appearance on The Jay Hill Podcast, Davis made shocking claims that Mayweather attempted to set him up to lose a title fight.

Davis specifically referred to his 2017 championship match against Jose Pedraza for the IBF Junior Lightweight Championship. It was Davis’ first major title fight, and he won by a seventh-round TKO, moving his record to 17-0. However, the Baltimore native claims that Mayweather purposely set up the fight, expecting him to lose, as he felt Davis wasn’t ready. Davis described his preparation as far from ideal, citing a long gap of “six months” between fights, which he considered a significant disadvantage for any fighter.

During the podcast, Davis shared how he was financially struggling at the time, earning only around $10,000 per fight. He felt forced into the Pedraza match under financial pressure, saying, “If you don’t fight him, you’re not fighting and sitting on the shelf.” He also revealed personal hardships, such as being evicted and having to sell his jewelry, adding to his belief that Mayweather had betrayed him.

Davis further explained that his strained relationship with Mayweather deepened after rumors emerged about his alleged interactions with Mayweather’s daughter, Yaya, on Snapchat. This, he believes, was the catalyst for Mayweather’s alleged attempt to sabotage his title shot.
