Jesse Williams Awarded Sole Custody of Children Following Prolonged Legal Battle With Ex Wife

Jesse Williams, widely recognized for his role as Dr. Jackson Avery on Grey’s Anatomy, has been granted sole legal custody of his two children following a lengthy and contentious custody dispute with his ex-wife, Aryn Drake-Lee. The decision, handed down after years of legal battles, represents a significant shift in the ongoing struggle over custody, child support, and visitation rights.
Williams, 43, and Drake-Lee, also 43, appeared in court on March 20, 2024, months after Williams requested a change to their custody arrangement. Initially, Williams had sought a 50/50 split, arguing that his limited visitation rights—especially during the school year—had hindered his ability to maintain a close relationship with their children. He reported having only two overnight visits per year with their kids, Sadie, 10, and Maceo, 9, during the school term.
The ruling marks a pivotal moment in the couple’s ongoing legal disputes, which began after their separation in 2017 and was finalized with their divorce in 2020. What once was a love-filled relationship has since morphed into a publicized court battle, with custody and the children’s well-being at the forefront. Drake-Lee had previously sought sole custody, arguing that Williams’ acting career—particularly his role on Grey’s Anatomy—often kept him away from home for extended periods.
In addition to the custody disputes, financial tensions have also been a significant point of contention. Initially, Williams was required to pay over $50,000 per month in child and spousal support. However, following his departure from Grey’s Anatomy and a reduction in his income, the payments were later adjusted to $6,413 per month, reflecting the financial challenges both parents faced in the midst of their evolving professional and personal lives.
This latest ruling in Williams’ favor signals a new chapter in the couple’s lengthy and public legal saga, one that will continue to shape the lives of their children moving forward.
