King Combs, the rising star in hip hop, is on a mission to create his own musical legacy with original tracks. However, when it comes to sampling, he admits that it can be tough to resist the allure of a certified hit.

We caught up with the Bad Boy Jr. at LAX, and we asked him about his access to his father’s iconic tunes for sampling in the studio.

There’s an ongoing debate in the rap world about whether today’s use of samples from popular hits, some of which already contain samples themselves, represents innovation or simply a lack of creativity.

King Combs points out the success he’s achieved with throwback samples.

His collaboration with Kodak Black, “Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop,” borrowed from Lil Kim’s “Crush on You” and even topped the Billboard rap charts. Similarly, “How You Want It?” featuring Teyana Taylor used the melody from Mase and Total’s “What You Want” and achieved Gold status.

He recently joined forces with A Boogie, Fabolous, and Jeremih to create “Flyest In the City,” which rides on the wave of another Total classic.

King Combs tells us he might hit the studio for a few more tracks that draw inspiration from past songs.

While some may debate the merits of sampling, for King Combs, the ultimate measure of success lies in the reception of the public.
